BLOG TOUR DE TROOPS--- Continues here!

Welcome!
As a part of this blog-hopping daisy chain, no doubt you have just arrived from Sonia's Rumizi's blog .She's got some very insightful posts (I loved her commentary on "My Sister's Keeper"), so I hope you took the time to click around. I also must say that Sonia looks incredibly better in a hat than I do---so props to Sonia for rocking that look. (http://soniarumzi.com/).

The next stop on the tour is Roy Finch. (I have no idea how he looks in a hat. ) But I know you'll love his wit. ( http://therealroyfinch.wordpress.com/)

And--if you feel the need to go back to "home base" -- it is http://indiebookcollective.wordpress.com/

Welcome! I'm joining 30 indie authors across the country to say a special THANK YOU to our troops this Memorial Day Weekend -- AND give away some FREE e-books to blog commenters AND soldiers.
Because every commenter on my blog today gets the ebook of "Leaving the Comfort Cafe" FREE!

Leaving the Comfort Cafe is about a redneck chick who gets a 1600 on her SAT, a full scholarship to Cornell, but never goes. Instead she works as a waitress at the Comfort Cafe, a "mom and pop" restaurant in Eastern North Carolina. Austin, the new town manager, is determined to find out why she gave up on her Ivy League dreams.

In five words or less, it's about crazy Southern white people.

But right now take time to THANK THE TROOPS with me as I talk about things I LOOOOVE about America --and how important it is to be grateful to our men and women who serve our country.

On Gratitude….a Memorial Day Weekend THANK YOU to our Troops

(a part of Blog Tour de Troops)

In the Bible, Jesus heals a group of ten lepers, and out of those ten, only one comes back to thank Him. Growing up and living in the “Bible Belt,” I’ve heard that story hundreds of times, and each time I hear it, I get really, really, pissed off.

I mean---- come ON you other nine lepers! What the *bleep* is the matter with you? You don’t even say THANK YOU?

Of course, I always envisioned myself as the one leper who came back to thank Jesus. Of course, I KNOW when to say THANK YOU.

Or do I?

It’s very easy to point to the ingratitude of others without look at the ingratitude we sometimes hide in our hearts, as I am much more anxious to get to the next meeting, movie, or chance update my Facebook status than to put my personal desires on hold long enough to say ‘thank you.’

And I think that most of us [self included] are much more like the 9 lepers than we are like the one who said THANK YOU.

I don’t say thank you often enough---particularly when it comes to the men and women in our military who are protecting our country. I don’t care if you’re a “hawk” or “dove,” liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat, these men and women deserve our THANKS and our GRATITUDE.

We’ve heard enough about what is “wrong” with America – so let me just take this time to list [in no particular order] the things that are RIGHT with America—the things that I want to THANK our troops for making possible.

Things that I LOVE about America (with a HUGE THANK YOU to the troops)

* First Amendment. I can worship freely without fear of torture or arrest. Many in the world cannot (check out Voice of the Martyrs if you don’t believe me).

* Navy Seals. These guys are so tough they can eat glass. Seriously. I literally think they can.

NOTE: I’m not trying to leave anyone out--- I’m pretty sure the Rangers and Green Berets and Marines can eat glass as well, or at least chew on it for a long period of time. The training these elite fighting forces undergo boggles my mind. There’s a reason we have the best military in the world.

* Individuality. I don’t have to be a lawyer because my father was one. I can do what I want as long as my rights don’t hurt the rights of another person.

* The Founding Fathers. No, they weren’t perfect, but they were perfectly earnest in wanting the best for our country. That deserves some respect.

* America was a vital ally in bringing down Hitler, the Axis powers, the Cold War, the Berlin Wall and – most recently—Osama Bin Laden.

* Anyone else put a man on the moon ?

* As much as I hate politics, America has one of—if not THE--- most peaceful transition of power in the world. That’s pretty amazing when you think about it.

* Our flag. I mean, it even LOOKS cool, doesn’t it?

* Gene Kranz. (Check him out here)

* Where else can a Serbian immigrant with 7 cents in his pocket create/ discover alternating current and help utilize hydropower for Niagra Falls? (It was Nikola Tesla. Check him out here.)

* I can post on this blog without a government censor looking over my shoulder.

* The Grand Canyon, Key West, Rocky Mountains---some of the prettiest sights in the world.

* My Shake Weight. I don’t know why, but I felt I needed to mention it.

* Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, reserves---- I am convinced that, like cops, 98 percent of our soldiers are model soldiers and represent the best America has to offer. Sadly, we usually only hear about the 2 percent that are obviously from another planet or something.

I just want the 98 percent to know that WE HEAR YOU AND WE KNOW YOU ARE THERE, even if you don’t make the front page of the newspapers, AND WE THANK YOU!!!!!!!

So, what are some of your favorite things about America? And what's your favorite patriotic song? "America the Beautiful" was always a fave of mine.

To receive a FREE copy of my novel, “Leaving the Comfort CafĂ©” in electronic format, just leave a comment below, along with your e-mail address. (Because, seriously, I can't send you the coupon code unless you leave me an e-mail addy).

For every individual person who comments on my blog, a FREE copy will also be sent to a soldier.

Thank you for helping me help our troops!

And your next stop is:  Roy Finch --- that's http://therealroyfinch.wordpress.com/ just in case the blog link isn't working. I've checked out his blog and I think you'll really enjoy his writing style. He's a hoot.

And BTW-- if you want to sample some FREE reads, just click on my picture on this blog or the links on the right.  You can even hear me READ from Leaving the Comfort Cafe on my website, dawndeannawilson.com . (Don't worry, I don't charge for the Eastern North Carolina accent).

So -- to recap---
America rocks.
Leave a comment (with your e-mail addy)
I'll send you a coupon code for a free copy of my book.
A copy of my book will be donated to a soldier [if you have a specific soldier in mind, let us know]
Check out Roy's site.
And say a prayer for our nation's troops.

I love our National Anthem, I also love the freedom we have to pick from many types of music daily. If I wanna listen to country . . flip the channel. Feeling a little old time rock and roll coming on, flip the channel. We have freedoms that our troops fought for. THANK YOU for even the smallest of freedoms as being able to pick our own music to listen to.

@ Mariya and everyone
--The inspiration from the fact that, growing up in a small town in the South, in the "Bible Belt"--I could not get away with anything. If I said a cuss word at school, my mom knew about it before I even got off the bus. The American South still carries with it--despite the redneck stereotypes--a certain unspoken rule of expectation, an almost "Ward and June Cleaver" atmosphere undercurrent that is subtle, but still there.
So at one point, I just thought, what if I could just run away, wait tables at some diner on the Outer Banks, live in a trailer, and drink, belch, wear slutty clothes, flirt shamelessly and say anything I wanted to without anyone knowing. It's that desire to re-invent yourself that I plugged into.
...and isn't it cool that we can do that so easily in America? The reinventing, I mean. Not the belching...although...

I like the melting pot comment...though sometimes I wonder if we're trying to be a salad bar.

Once I interviewed a "Dead Head" for a newspaper article. His quote "Dude, we're a melting pot, man. So just let it melt."

Still not sure what he meant by that, but I think he meant it well.

My father served in Vietnam as a Marine and I wouldn't doubt that he could eat glass - I'll have to ask him! Lol.
My grandfather was an Amphibian in the Navy---"The Navy SEALs originated during WWII when the U.S. Navy recognized the need for soldiers to reconnoiter landing beaches, note obstacles and defenses, and ultimately guide the landing forces in. As a result the Amphibious Scout and Raider School was established in 1942 jointly by the Army and Navy at Fort Pierce, Florida."

Thanks for supporting our troops!

It might be worthwhile to note---since the crazy Southern white people [CSWP ]have seemed to strike a common chord---that you do not have to be Southern or white to be a CSWP. I'm not even sure you have to be a person.

And speaking of which, I just noticed in the local newspaper --Rocky Mount Telegram--that the cops had cracked a case where this dude stole an ELEVATOR.

Let me say that again. Some dude. Stole. Someone's. Elevator.

Evidently some antique elevator was stolen from some business.

An elevator.

They think he used some cherry picker and crane to do it.

Now, not that I am advocating alife of crime, but WHO says "Damn, that's a sweet elevator. I wish it was mine. Hey, does Earl still have that crane?"

And pardon me for saying damn before noon. Not sure why the time matters, but I try to wait until at least 2 if I feel like I've got to cuss.

I'm sorry, an ELEVATOR?

Your blog post is hilarious - and right on. I admit I don't think about my freedoms until Memorial Day and July 4th come around, but I live them everyday and they were made possible by the people who fight when I cannot. I'm so grateful there are those who can put themselves in harm's way to protect so many others who have no idea of what they're doing. Thank you words aren't enough, but it's the only way to express my gratitude.

Thank YOU for sending them words to distract them from the horrors they often face!

And because Billie is too modest, let me brag on her a bit...

Billie is just a darn good writer. Period. She's a part of my writing group and I'm not just saying this because I know her. She knows her craft and practices it beautifully.

I am shocked [and somewhat disgusted] that she hasn't been picked up by a major Big 6 publisher.

I've read the book she's giving away, and the writing is very lyrical and the characters are hauntingly real.

Another book of hers I love is a middle grade work she did called Janes Transformation about a Magical Pony School. It's Harry Potter meets a horse ranch meets Celtic Mythology. She's not giving that away, but if you have kids [or even if you don't] you'll love it.

Okay, I'll shut up now.

I look forward to reading your book. Thank you for being part of this event. I grew up a Navy brat, so our troops have always held a special place in my heart!

Great thing about America: the right to agree and disagree. And being able to agree or disagree about the war our troops are fighting right now. Personally, I don't agree with this war (being in Iraq) or at least how long it has lasted. Our men & women shouldn't have to be there in harms way. But I fully support our troops and their willingness to fulfill their duty in whatever capacity they are called to do! How amazing that we have the right to be against a war but can still honor those who are called to fight. We have the right to protest a war and support our troops at the same time (I know that sounds like an oxymoron)! How amazing is that?!?! They have sacrificed for my right to disagree. Everyday I pray for their safe and speedy return home. God Bless you all for your service!!!

If your book reads anything like this blog post, I just can't wait to read it! I am half a crazy southern white woman on my mother's side. In fact, my generation is the first born north of the Mason/Dixon line! My email address is talesfromshrimps.com Thanks so much for doing this; my father, a brother-in-law and a nephew have/are serving in our Armed Forces. I'm proud of them all.

Dawn said...

Wow! I am totally overwhelmed with all the wonderful responses I've received from folks and all of those who have commented in honor of a family member who is serving overseas or has served.

WOW.
I just got back from a birthday party for my friends kid---another cool thing about America. I was sitting there in the back yard with family and thought how amazing it was to be alive and be a part of this---and that many have given up time with their families so I could enjoy it.

I'll be sending out coupon codes tonight. Thank you all so much for everything.

Maybe it's just because I was in the marching band during high school, but I love "Stars and Stripes Forever" as well. Particularly the piccolo solo. I could never quite master hte piccolo [I play flute].

BTW--- on cable--- AMC, in between movies on the theme of "war heroes," is showing scenes from this documentary Tom Brokaw did on soldiers and what makes them decide to sign up...it's interesting.

We make sure we explain to out kids the reason and go to something in honor of the troups, both present and past! Thank you for honoring out troups and trying to spread some joy!

I am a military brat and my in-laws are still active in the military. I think this is such a cool idea! A great way to help support our troops!
My favorite Patriotic Song would have to be "Wild Blue Yonder" (The Air Force theme song,) as I heard it many occasions growing up as we moved base to base. It was one of the things that stayed the same. I love that I have so many Freedoms.... anything from
religion to what I eat for meals.
I look forward to reading your book!

Thank you for taking part in this event, Dawn, and for making our troops smile with what you, and the rest of the authors have given them. I know that they appreciate things very much much. The hop onto your blog was heartfelt and very touching.

LizzieBeth1095@sbcglobal.net

Dawn said...

Yeah, I think we don't realize that the periods of deployment can so many times be "hurry up and wait" and that has to be incredibly psychologically difficult. Seriously.

I'm touched by how many of you know / have mentioned a serviceman/woman or are from military families. Let's not forget that the families are also a part of the equation, and they deserve our respect.

Dawn said...

@ Jack---
Thanks dude. Hey, when are we going to see Keroac's house? I want you to take my picture on the front porch and then we can run away like a couple of high school kids.

Dawn said...

@ KAtie, "Wild Blue Yonder" is cool.
I also like the Marine anthem as well.

Dawn said...

@ Melissa, that reminds me of a quote, and I'm not sure who said it, if it was Patton or McArthur:

"The soldier, above all others, prays for peace."

Thanks for treating our troops to a gift. I am sure they will like it. I get so mad when people talk bad about our military when they don't agree with war. Do they not understand if was those same people that protect the right for them to even have an opinion. I'd like to send out a huge thank you to all those that keep us safe and protect our freedom both in war times and peace times because it's hard during both.
thank you fellow brat Carol. :-)

Thank you for taking part in this tour. Yes, Gene Kranz is awesome. I went down to Florida in November in hopes of seeing a shuttle launch (sadly, it was delayed even before I reached the airport 2 days before the scheduled launch!), and I read his autobiography beforehand to kind of prepare for a space heavy trip. He was really readable and inspiring.

Ah, yes, the highway system. That should have been as obvious as the Shake Weight. I can't believe I missed it.

Dawn said...

Oh, I meant to say, one of the great things about this in addition to helping our brave men and women, is that I get to connect with readers and other writers. That's awesome, because so many times writing seems to be a solitary profession.

I wanted to let you know that-- time allowing--I am always glad to come and talk to book clubs (for free) and even civic groups and non-profit organizations like the Boys and Girls Clubs (for FREE) I give seminars, etc. and don't charge for non-profit "Girl Scout" / church youth group / ESL type stuff. I just think it's important to "pay it forward."

So I'll be glad to visit on my own dime provided it's not someplace crazy --ah HECK even if it IS someplace crazy. I have this incredible wanderlust and am always looking to explore great places in this wonderful country (or planet--I do have a passport).

I do teach writing classes (which I do charge for, but very reasonably). My specialty is dialogue--particulary the non-sequitir technique (not sure if that's an actual term...that's just what my professor called it.
